7 Signs your friend has a crush on you

Perhaps you’ve thought, at one time or another, that a friend might just think of you in a way that is a bit more serious. Emotions can be very difficult to decode unless one has a keen sense for observation and intuition.

This is particularly true if one happens to have a very close (think ‘BFF’) relationship with a person, as behaviors that may signify love or infatuation are more complicated.

Whether you want to nurse the romantic relationship or not, it’s always good to be able to tell if your friend likes you. An unrequited crush like this can throw off the dynamic of your friendship or friend group, and turn into a seriously awkward situation quickly.

If you’re not into this person, you can decide what you want to do with this information. But maybe you have a crush on them too! In that case, you will definitely want to know the truth! So, instead of bringing it up or thinking about it constantly, let’s figure it out.

1. They are mostly the ones to initiate the conversation and always respond quickly:

If they think of you as just a friend, they respond at a normal pace. But if they have ~feelings~ for you, they either eagerly dash off a response and hit "send" 0.000001 seconds after you send your text.

2. They suddenly become shy around you

This is different for everyone, but sudden shyness may be a sign of attraction. The best explanation is that they’re probably coming to grips with the complex thoughts and feeling that accompany crushing on a friend…or they’re just plain nervous around you now. Either way, it may be a good indicator.

3. They never approve of the person you have a crush on or the person you're dating.

They even make little dagger eyes when you bring up their name. They insist that no one is good enough for you — when really what they mean is that they are the only one who's good enough for you. Shawn Mendes's new single "Treat You Better" is literally their life.

4. They always seem to be looking at you

If you notice that, all of a sudden, your friend begins starring at you, it may be a sign you’ve become more attractive to them. A usually reliable sign is if they seem to do this at the expense of pretty much everyone else in the room. They may even lower their eyes or look elsewhere if you look back.

5. They’re super concerned with their appearance around you

One of the more obvious ways to know your friend is crushing on you is if they suddenly become meticulous with their appearance. This is especially the case when they know you are going to be somewhere, and make the extra effort to look their best.

6. They love to keep you guessing

If your friend suddenly begins taking you aback – by gifts, food, or something else – it may be a strong signal that they’re attracted. Frequency is important here, as by nature, some people are just supremely generous. But, intuition and common sense will stimulate the notion that they’re acting strangely.

7. They find lots of little excuses to touch you.

If your friend is either touching you more than usual, or making an effort to close the distance between you, it may be a good sign that they’re crushing. When you make a funny joke, they punch you lightly on the arm.

When they see you for the first time after a school vacation, they hug you super tight. Sure, they might just be a touchy-feely kind of person... or they might have a really good reason for wanting to be close to you.
